Sam Brownback: 'The Poor Will Save Us'
The Republican senator says it just might take a religious revival to save America.
Interview by David Kuo

Sam Brownback, Republican senior senator from Kansas, has his eyes on the White House. He is a social conservative through and through. He is staunchly pro-life. He is against gay marriage. He is also radically pro-poor and has spent much time and effort trying to bring the poor's plight - particularly in Africa - to America's attention. He sat down with Beliefnet's Washington editor, David Kuo, to talk openly and in depth about his religious faith and what it is going to take to save America. Watch segments of the interview or read an extended version below.

Check out Mike Huckabee as well, Dan. He is a Baptist minister from Arkansas, former Governor of Arkansas, and is making a run at the White House as well. You can read more about some of his stuff here.

Looking forward to talking politics with you when we get there. I will have to brush up on some of what is going on, though. Any movies you want us to bring?

Movies! That´s a good idea especially since we are staying in many nights now with the pregnancy. Angelica´s favorite titles are: Fiddler on the Roof, Walk the Line (Johnny Cash) and First Fruits (the story of the first Moravian missionaries to the New World).

Yes, I´ve heard of Huckabee. What are his views on global poverty? Does he favor more Free Trade agreements and hope that corporate profits trickly down to the poor? Sojourners will have Obama, Clinton and Edwards at their conf. next month to ask them about their faith and poverty issues. They hope to have Republican candidates in the Fall and hope Huckabee attends. Dan

I will see if I can get the answers to those questions for you.
